British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages providing entry to the depot... initial indications are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their courage," Healey added. "They were part of thousands of British troops deployed over the festive period. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, shows how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military executed what it termed a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
